Tree Removal & Pruning

Tree Removal

Sometimes it is necessary to remove a tree from a space, where pruning would not be appropriate. This could be for a number of reasons, the tree could be dead or show significant signs of disease, the tree could be planted in the wrong place and has become too large or is too close to the house and there are structural concerns, it is an obstruction to development, have a very heavy lean on a banking or has become very unbalanced etc.

In Woodland areas tree thinning is the process of removing smaller trees to allow more space for larger and more established ones. This is sometimes appropriate in the garden.

Tree removal is always something to consider carefully before procedure as some trees have enormous aesthetic and ecological value and more often than not are irreplaceable (like for like)

Consider also that if your tree is in a conservation area or has a Tree Preservation Order on it (TPO) you may not be allowed to remove it without permission, or in some cases at all.

Tree removal can be a dangerous and technical process. Our job is to ensure that the tree is dismantled safely and efficiently. Use of rigging techniques to carefully 'rope-down' sections of timber is sometimes necessary to prevent damage to paving, fences etc. Every tree must be observed and a unique plan must be made accordingly to match the needs of the situation.

Tree Pruning

Tree pruning is how we manage and preserve the trees within our landscape. For example we may want to stop tree branches growing too near to the roof of a house or a telecom wire, so would recommend a 'drawback' to a suitable growth point. Tree pruning most be performed in a considered fashion otherwise the aesthetic, balance and health of the tree can be compromised.

In general, common tree pruning options are

  • Crown Reduction This would be reducing the overall size of the crown of the tree
  • Pollarding A dramatic pruning technique often seen in street trees in urban areas. Can be used to stop the tree becoming too large for the space. The tree will temporaily have a 'stubby' appearance and shortly after it will encourage dense regrowth. Not all species of trees take well to pollarding.
  • Crown Thinning Thinning out the crown leaving the overall size and shape of the tree allows more light, reduces weight and 'wind-sail' effect.
  • Crown Lifting This would be raising the crown height (clearance height from the ground) often to prevent obstruction. Note that doing this very excessively can unbalance the tree.
  • Deadwooding Cutting away deadwood, which improves tree health and can make the tree safer for pedestrians and cars travelling underneath.
  • Drawing Back Drawing back laterally, often to reduce obstruction from telecom wires etc.

Tree Planting

We can help you to find an appropriate tree for your space to enjoy. We enjoy tree planting, and getting it right helps you to get the most out of the tree; incorrectly planted and specified trees can cause problems later on. Planting trees is an enjoyable way to add beauty and screening to your space. We can help you look though the options.
